The two hour computer graphic animated film Kingsglaive that was designed to whet gamer’s appetites for the November release of the role playing game Final Fantasy XV received less than critical praise from Rolling Stone on August 26, 2016. The critique in the Stone compares the film to Star Wars in coherence of plot and narrative.
The plot of Kingsglaive follows the theme and plot of the Final Fantasy franchise with a few additions and subtractions. Lucis is fighting a losing war against Niflheim and has retreated to its bastion stronghold called Insomnia. Aaron Paul of ‘Breaking Bad’ fame voices the main protagonist Nyx who is tasked with protecting the long lost and as yet unknown Lucis royal family member, Lunafreya, who is now an emissary for the Niflheim. Lunafreya is portrayed by the voice of Lena Headey.
The film stays true to the graphic content of the game. Warriors magically appear out of nothing. The graphic content is luxurious and explosive in a literal sense. The character names are taken straight from the game and may take a few seconds to pronounce completely. Most everyone dies in the end. That may be a spoiler but that is how the game goes.
Takeshi Nozue directed the graphics, scripting, and content of Kingsglaive. While the writers of the Rolling Stone criticize the film for being overdone graphically one has to think that the writers miss the mark in knowing how the game overdoes the graphics.
The makers of Final Fantasy XV could not resist putting a few ads for their other products into the film. Based on the sales history of films based on epic games, this is not a bad idea in promoting your sales because you know the film may not do well.
Fans of the game will inevitably flock to the film despite anything a critic says.
