It wasn’t anywhere close to authentic cocaine, but Jonah Hill certainly enjoyed his time snorting it.
The “War Dogs” star has been making the rounds promote his latest movie, but Jonah Hill has been telling stories of his days making “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and how much fun he had snorted the fake cocaine.
Hill’s role in the iconic Martin Scorsese movie was that of Donnie Azoff, a debaucherous financial crook in cahoots with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort. Together, their characters defrauded wealthy investors out of millions of dollars, snorting fake cocaine the whole way through.
Jonah Hill recounts that it was around seven months of doing fake cocaine, every single day, that eventually downed him with bronchitis. He was hospitalized for about three weeks.
And yet, he was quick to say that the experience was “pretty iconic,” and how he’d “do it again in a second.” To Hill, the first time of snorting fake cocaine in a Marin Scorsese movie is “every actor’s dream.”
Yes, it was probably worth his three-week bronchitis.
The Wolf of Wall Street went on to be Scorsese’s highest-grossing film, earning a gross of $392 million USD, against its budget of $100 million USD. The film was also nominated for all the major film awards-giving celebrations, as well as some lesser-known awards-giving bodies. It has also earned critical acclaim across the internet’s movie critic circles.
Meanwhile, “War Dogs” is a biographical crime war comedy-drama film loosely based on the true story of two men who won a government contract to supply weapons for U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan. Jonah Hill stars as Efraim Diveroli, one of the main characters.
As for the fake cocaine that Hill snorted in his “Wolf of Wall Street” days, it was powdered vitamin D. And while he said that that much vitamin D made him feel like he could lift a car over his head, he also admitted that getting that much powder—even vitamin powder—into one’s lungs could land a person in a hospital, just as he did.
And so, while iconic, it was definitely something that’s hazardous to Jonah Hill’s respiratory health. At least, for three weeks or so.
