While speaking to BBC Radio recently, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates discussed the world’s current vulnerability to a widespread virus. In his belief, the recent outbreaks of Zika and Ebola have exposed weaknesses in the manner in which we handle health concerns of that nature.

His foundation has invested heavily in improving healthcare conditions in a wide range of developing nations and according to Gates, global emergency response systems are not as strong as they need to be and vaccines are severely lacking.

He also spoke about the importance of creating treatments for epidemics that are likely to take place, adding that he keeps his fingers crossed that a major flu epidemic does not come along in the next ten years.

Better medical tools exist than ever before and response times have improved greatly, but in the eyes of Gates, more alterations need to be made. He spoke in defense of the World Health Organization, whose handling of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Africa was considered to be subpar.

Bill Gates believes that the World Health Organization did not have the funding or resources to handle the problem in the proper manner. He is also worried about the growing resistance to antibiotics and the complacency that has resulted from the prevalence of the drugs.

First World nations have a responsibility to assist developing countries, both for the greater good of the world and their own self interest. With the help of international cooperation, Gates hopes that other diseases will join the ranks of polio, which is on the verge of being eradicated entirely.
