Lt. John O’Leary, a World War II Marine veteran, celebrated his 100th birthday.

The retired marine from Kansas, celebrated his birthday this week. The celebration took place at the Evergreen Community of Johnson County in Olathe.

The veteran is part of the about 16 million Americans that participated in the Second World War and that are still alive.

On December 7, 1941, the 100-year-old joined the Marine Corps. This happened after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese.

Soon, he had to lead ashore beach party with the 3rd Joint Assault Signal Company.

In 1944, June, he fought for regaining Guam from the Japanese. From his troop’s ship, he saw as Iwo Jima was bombarded.

The veteran recalls how he spent one year and a half in Guam. He says that he needed to become a good ducker and that he has many unbelievable memories.

The Marine Corps Reserve had its 100th anniversary as well. President Woodrow Wilson set the date on August 29, 1916.

O’Leary has a lot of admiration for the Marine Corps and says that it is an amazing organization. Its members are very dedicated and he says that he is proud to have been proud of it.

It is amazing to see a World War II veteran still alive today, especially turning such an amazing age. The country and the Marine Corps sure are proud to have had such a great person amongst them.
