In the last decade, scientists have struggled to draw the attention towards the danger posed by the sea level rise, a phenomenon caused by global warming

The most recent study reveals what the real consequences will look like in the next 20, 50 or 80 years, writes CNN.

Metropolises such as New York, Boston, San Francisco or Miami might disappear because they will be engulfed by oceans and all the cities situated in coastal areas are at risk.

“This research shows exactly what the global warming impact will be. The number of people affected by floods will grow faster than sea level”, stated study author Benjamin Strauss.

He argues that his study is not an “apocalyptic scenario,” but it is important to be seriously dealt by the authorities, who should adopt drastic measures in terms of reducing global carbon emissions.

The study shows that Miami, which is already affected by massive floods every single year and so far has spent millions of dollars repairing the damages caused by the aggressive precipitations, will become the most affected.

“Between 165 and 180 communities will be flooded in the next 15 – 20 years. Their number will increase to 270 – 360 over the next 40 years, depending on the speed by which the ocean level will rise, and by the end of the century, 480 communities will be affected, and this only if the ocean will report a moderate level rise”, said climate analyst, Erika Spanger-Seigfried.
