The French police it’s being accused of violating human rights

The abuses against the immigrants from Calais include contaminating water and food sources and the use of pepper spray against minors.

These are just some of the accusations mentioned in a Human Rights Watch report, 100% denied by the French police.

Contaminated food and water, the confiscation of sleeping bags and the use of pepper sprays are the so-called “recipe” used by the French officers as an attempt to discourage immigrants who want to reach to the UK.

“The problem is the police, the French police. No sleeping, no eating, no running. Gas, gas, gas every day. No sleep, spray, spray, spray. I’m sorry”, were the exact words of an immigrant, trying to explain their current living situation.

It’s just one of the 60 testimonies the Human Rights Watch activists based on when they created the report.

“This use of force is completely unjustified. This is disproportionate and constitutes a violation of human rights”, says Human Rights Watch’s director Benedicte Jeannerod.

The police officers reject the accusations and say there is no agent in France who has been convicted of abusive behavior towards any immigrant.

“This is just another accusation against us. It’s becoming boring and tiring. We know these charitable organizations well and this is what they do: they always accuse the police of violence. I cannot imagine a police officer spraying (with pepper, n.r.) on bedding or food. We have a code of ethic and we act according to the law”, has revealed Frederic Balland.

A regional court has forced authorities to provide drinking water, toilets and showers to immigrants, but also to allow charitable organizations to bring food.

The Calais camp, known as the Jungle, was demolished last year by the French authorities.
