A few weeks after Jay Z launched his 13th album “4:44” a rock band from New Jersey thought they could take advantage of their own name (4:44) and release a song called… Jay Z writes The Key.

The US progressive rock band 4:44 made of guitarist Anthony Friedlander, bassist Greg Mele Jr., and drummer Zach Gormley, wrote on the cover of their new album that bears the name of Beyonce’s husband that “this is a shameless marketing technique”.

Their music is characterized by a variety of jam-sessions.

With the release of his new album, the New Jersey rock band gave all artists a lesson of what a stunning marketing technique actually means.

Jay Z and his representatives did not react in any way to the name of the song just yet.

The rapper explained in one of the promotional materials for his album, released on June 30 in the middle of the night, that he chose this name because that was the time when he woke up at night to write the name of his piece de resistance.

The marketing technique used by 4:44 is not exactly new. Over the years many other bands and famous artists have named their new stuff after more popular singers.

The most eloquent examples are REM and Green: after REM has released in 1988 the album entitled “Green”, Chicago’s Green band reacted by releasing an EP called REM, which was a clear answer to the album of well-known rockers.
