Russian agents tried to obtain information related to Emmanuel Macron’s campaign via Facebook fake accounts, a few weeks before the presidential election, an American congressmen told Reuters.

Approximately 20 accounts would have been created especially for this purpose

Facebook’s leading board has announced in April that measures against the dissemination of false information related to certain presidential elections were adopted.

The “En Marche Movement!” whose founder has defeated Marine Le Pen, the head of the National Front, announced that he was the victim of a “massive” piracy operation shortly before the victory was declared, but she did not report an infiltration attempt on her Facebook accounts.

Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in these attacks

US intelligence services came to the conclusion the hacking team was related to the Russian government, but they could not demonstrate Kremlin’s involvement.

Facebook has confirmed to Reuters that he has detected the suspicious accounts in France and they have deactivated them.

Representatives of the social giant informed their French partners, mentioning something about 70.000 accounts, although, in April, the company was speaking about 30.000 accounts.

“FANCY BEAR”

According to one of these partners and two other sources, some of these accounts were created by Russian agents, friends of some of Emmanuel Macron’s friends in order to obtain personal information about the candidate and his family.

Employees from Facebook would have detected the attempt during the first round of the French presidential election and, according to the company’s experts, the computer tools used by a unit of the GRU, the intelligence services of the Russian Army, were also used to obtain the personal information.
