The Turkish cleric, accused by Recep Tayyip Erdogan of orchestrating the failed coup attempt from 2016, revealed on Wednesday that he has no plans of leaving the United States and he is willing to accept the extradition if Washington would approve Ankara’s conditions, writes Reuters.

During the candid interview in his complex from the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, 79-year-old Fethullah Gulen denied, once again, the rumor that he was preparing to flee to Canada in order to avoid his extradition to Turkey.

“These rumors are not true at all. If the United States finds it appropriate to extradite me, I will go to Turkey”, Gulen said.

Gulen condemned the constitutional referendum from April and the suppression of the media, comparing Recep Tayyip Erdogan with a dictator.

“If Erdogan hears a strong voice from the United States or the European Union, the European Parliament, Brussels, saying<< What you’re doing is wrong … your judicial system does not work>> then maybe he will change his approach”, added the cleric.

In May, Recep Erdogan said that he is willing to “go all the way” in order to extradite Fethullah Gulen.

Turkey has declared a state of emergency after the incidents of 2016.

More than 100.000 people in the public and private environments have been dismissed or suspended and nearly 50,000 of them have been arrested, being accused of having ties with cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Ankara’s actions have been harshly criticized by several European states and human rights organizations.
