A Turkish BBC journalist was released by the Turkish authorities after she spent a day in custody.

According to Hatice Kamer, the authorities detained the woman because she was reporting a mining accident from the Siirt region, in southeastern Turkey.

The BBC headquarters from Turkey announced that Hatice Kamer was jailed overnight at the police station from Siirt and that she is ok. Although everything turned out fine for the journalist, the not-so-pleasant part was the fact that no one offered an explanation for the retention.

The mining accident caused the death of 11 people and five are still missing. Before her arresting, Hatice was struggling to contact the relatives of the miners who died in the accident. The Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) TV network said they received the information that Hatice was actually ‘supporting the PKK terrorist organization’.

According to the Turkish authorities, Hatice was prosecuted and she will face a lawsuit, just like the other 145 journalists from Turkey who were linked to the coup attempt.

The Turkish law enforcements launched a ‘cleaning’ campaign against the supporters of Fethullah Gulen.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan was criticized for the harsh measures taken against every single individual accused of participating in the attempted coup from July 15.

Earlier in November, the authorities arrested several members of the executive board and journalists from the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet.

According to BBC, Hatice Kamer’s arrest occurred on November 26. So far, the judges have no evidence regarding a potential connection between Hatice and PKK.
