We all yawn when we’re tired, when we watch boring movies or when we’re engaged in meaningless conversations.

But scientists say it’s more than that!

Did you ever yawned, apparently without a reason, and felt ashamed for having to cover your mouth that doesn’t want to remain closed anymore, although you don’t have the slightest reason to feel tired or bored?

Yawning it’s easily transmitted

Perhaps you have heard about the contagious effect of yawning, but you considered it a popular superstition. Apparently, it’s not!

Scientists have discovered that when a person close to us yawns, we feel the need to follow his example, not because we’re bored or sleepy, but because we subconsciously want to strengthen our relationship with that person.

This theory applies more to family members and friends and less to strangers.

Your brain needs more oxygen

Scientists have noticed that we tend to yawn more frequently when it’s cold outside and correlated this with the function of filling the lungs with more oxygen.

Yawning occurs when our brains need to cool down. That is why we tend to yawn in the middle of an exciting action: we are not bored but rather our brain is working at full speed and wants an oxygen break.

You’re smarter than average people!

Are you the one that yawns the most during a meeting? Next time your boss gives you that reproachful look, tell him this: discoveries have shown that mammals with a more developed brain tend to yawn more frequently because they need more oxygen.

You may have a serious illness

You may start worrying only if you are yawning very often and you cannot stop!

It looks like myocardial infarction and cerebral stroke have this symptom, among other things.

Also, diseases that involve poor oxygenation of the brain, such as epilepsy or multiple sclerosis can cause frequent episodes of yawning, in order to ventilate the body.
