Argentina won its first Davis Cup after the final with Croatia 3-2

Argentina won its first male tennis competition, the Davis Cup, on Sunday in Zagreb, after beating Croatia 3-2 in the final, thanks to Federico Delbonis, who brought the victory point, scoring 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 with the veteran Ivo Karlovic.


Argentina managed to win the Davis Cup at its fifth attempt, after losing the first four finals in 1981, 2006, 2008 and 2011.


Croatia, who led 2-1 on Saturday and was favorite to win, hoped to get its second Davis trophy 11 years after the victory with Slovakia, that was played in Bratislava in 2005.


On Friday, during the first two singles matches, Juan Martín del Potro defeated Ivo Karlovic with 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5, and Marin Cilic beat Federico Delbonis with 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 1-6, 6-2, then Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig defeated the pair Juan Martín del Potro – Leonardo Mayer, 7-6 (2) 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Saturday.


On Sunday, Juan Martín del Potro brought a big point for Argentina at the end of the marathon that lasted nearly five hours, winning in front of Marin Cilic with 6-7 (4/7), 2-6, 7-5, 6 -4, 6-3.


Ivo Karlovic (37 years-old) failed to cope in front of Delbonis Federico, though his advantage in the direct matches, 3-1. In October, the Croatian won three sets in Tokyo, with Delbonis 7-6 (6) 6-7 (6) 7-6 (5).


The service, the most formidable weapon of the giant of 2.11 m, stopped functioning within normal parameters and Karlovic managed just 14 aces by making seven double faults. The number of straight winning balls was relatively small, 13, to that of unforced errors, 42.


Delbonis had 5 aces, two double faults, 25 winners and 17 unforced errors.
