According to Kommersant’s Monday edition, Vladimir Putin is preparing the reforming of KGB. According to Russian journalists, the return of the former KGB under another name is Putin’s main concern these days.

To be more specific, Putin wants to set up a Ministry of State Security (MGB) – a security organization that will merge the FSB (the current domestic intelligence and counterintelligence service of Russia), the Federal border guard service and SVR (the foreign intelligence service).

The only structure that remains independent is FSO (The Security Service of the President) that will receive special responsibilities in the communications sector and surveillance during dignitary trips.

MGB name has not been used since the death of Stalin, when the structure was replaced by KGB. This ministry will provide various services under a single command, ‘for better management of safety’ and it will ‘eliminate corruption in these institutions’.

Sources inside Kommersant say that it’s basically about a re-initiation of KGB, just like in the Soviet era The secret agents will get involved in cases of large scale corruption, while the duties of the prosecutors will be reduced.

The most affected institution by this new strategy must be the Investigative Committee, ‘Sledkom’ – an anti-corruption agency founded in 2011. This civil structure detached from the Prosecutor General of Russia, might bet a purely symbolic role and its current boss, Alexander Bastrikin will, most likely, be replaced in the upcoming months or even weeks, following a series of corruption scandals within Sledkom recently disclosed by an FSB investigation.
