The Tagalog police officers defused an improvised bomb on Monday. The exploding device was detected in a trash can from Manila, near the U.S. Embassy, reported the authorities.

The police chief told AFP that the bomb which consisted of a mobile phone, a detonator, a 9 Volts battery and an 81 mm shell was discovered by a scavenger.

‘Probably, there was in intention to detonate the device because a mobile phone and a detonator were found at the scene’, told Oscar Albayalde to a French press agency.

‘An investigation is underway’, added Albayalde.

According to the Tagalog press, a team of specialists was rushed to the scene to ‘defuse’ the DIY bomb. The investigators are planning to interrogate a number of witnesses and to obtain the images from the surveillance system from the area.

The spokesman of the Manila forces Marissa Bruno failed to offer further details regarding the case, mentioning that a press statement will be issued in the next week.

According to Fox News, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority official Frisco San Juan Jr. said they had to divert traffic from a portion of Roxas Boulevard fronting the embassy. The closed lane of the road was reopened after police declared the area safe.

The device was placed at less than 200 meters from the American Embassy. Apparently, no one was reported hurt.

‘We are thankful that the municipal employee and the (police) took quick and appropriate action to ensure the safety of all’, stated US Embassy Press Attaché and First Secretary Molly Koscina.
