When the Japanese launched the supersonic Shinkansen train in 1964, the timing was perfect: Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympic Games and the whole world could see the innovations of Japanese technology.

In 2020, Tokyo will once again be the host city for the Olympic Games, so the Japanese decided to seize the moment and put into circulation a new high-speed train, called maglev, which reached during a test the speed of 603 km/h, writes the Business Magazine.

The new speed record was set at less than a week after the maglev train reached a speed of 590 kilometers per hour, surpassing the previous record of 581 mph set in 2003.

The name ‘maglev’ refers to the operation system it has and is derived from the phrase ‘magnetic levitation’. So, maglev trains use magnetic fields in order to move and they are able to reach much higher speeds than all ordinary trains.

The first cities in Japan that will adopt the latest invention and will be connected through the line will be Tokyo and Nagoya, and the duration of the trip will be off approximately 40 minutes.

But the train made by Japanese is not the fastest in the world. The Hyperloop train, announced this year by Elon Munsk, will run between Los Angeles and San Francisco with a speed of 1 200 km/h.

Maglev trains float 10 centimeters above the tread and are powered by electromagnets.

By 2045, maglev trains should cross the 410 km of distance between Tokyo and Osaka in just one hour and seven minutes, halving the travel time today.

It has been estimated that the cost of building the necessary infrastructure would go up to $ 100 billion just for the Tokyo-Nagoya line, with over 80% of the route passing through tunnels carved into the mountains.
