The Japanese will create the fastest supercomputer in the world, standing out once again among the most advanced countries in terms of technology.

Japan wants to reinforce its pioneering position when it comes to technology. Researchers have started working on a supercomputer that aims to become the fastest in the world.

The goal, according to digitaltrends.com, is to create a machine powerful enough to be useful for the development of technologies such as autonomous cars, but also to contribute to progress in medicine and robotics.

However, such a supercomputer is not cheap. The Ministry of Economy is planning to invest around $173 million to initiate the project. Meanwhile, Japan is planning to stand out among the regional technological superpowers, South Korea and China.

How fast will be this supercomputer, though? It should have a computing power of 130 petaflops, being able to perform 130,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second.

Thus, this Japanese machine would be considerably faster than the most powerful supercomputer in the world, that currently has a computing power of 93 petaflops – Sunway Taihulight, designed in China.

The new supercomputer will not only be extremely powerful but will also be functional very soon. Japan hopes that the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology would be able to reveal the computer in 2017.

One of the key areas in which researchers hope that the supercomputer will excel is that of artificial intelligence. As a computer calculates increasingly faster, scientists hope that it will become more similar to our own brains, opening new horizons in the field of advanced learning.
