Thousands of protesters surrounded the streets of Brussels on Thursday to ‘greet’ US President Donald Trump, who arrived in the European capital to take part at the NATO summit.
Brussels is hosting the NATO summit at the EU headquarters, two heavily criticized institutions by Donald Trump during his presidential campaign.
In 2016, the American state leader said the residents of Brussels ‘live in an extremely unpleasant place / in a gully’.
The demonstrations got out musicians, businessmen, actors and entrepreneurs from their houses.
Most of them carry the Belgian flag and “We fight against Donald Trump and his billionaire’s friends” banners, “Stay away from our gully” or “Mr. Trump, you are not welcome here.”
“One thing is certain, no one is happy about Donald Trump’s arrival”, declared political consultant Lawrence Kerknawi.
Meanwhile, Belgian resident Claude Decorte stated during a live interview: “Donald Trump does not know what he’s talking about. I’d like to see him pointing Belgium on a map. I do not think he knows where Belgium is.”
After last year’s UK referendum, Donald Trump encouraged other EU member states to follow the example of the British.
On Thursday, Donald Trump is set to meet with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
Then, the White House leader will serve lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Today, Donald Trump participates for the first time at a NATO summit.
