The sculpture made by Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi was sold for a staggering amount during an auction organized by Christie’s.
The unique piece was acquired for $57, 37 million dollars, reports AFP, and the winner refused to reveal his name.
According to the same source, the auction took place in New York and the new possessor is, in fact, media mogul David Geffren.
However, when one journalist contacted Geffren, the tycoon denied the rumors.
Brancusi’s sculpture dates from 1913 and the auction lasted for less than nine minutes.
The ‘sleeping muse’ was estimated to 25 -35 million dollars but the amounts offered during the auction went out of control.
Besides Brancusi’s sculpture, at the same event, no less than 43 objects were put for auction.
However, the ‘sleeping muse’ managed to become the ‘gem’ of the night after it surpassed Picasso’s ‘Feeme Assise Robe Bleue’, sold for $45 million dollars.
The ‘sleeping muse’ was crafted by the Romanian sculptor in 1913 and it’s one of the six made by Brancusi in that period.
Four of them are exposed in museums from all around the world.
Another version of ‘the sleeping muse’ was made by the artist from metal and it was acquired by French collector Jacques Ulmanm in the ’50’s.
