The Liberal University of Brussels generated this massive controversy on social media after, last week, they ‘urged’ female students to show cleavage at the graduation ceremony
The unusual ‘demand’ turned into this major scandal that shook one of Belgium’s most appreciated institutions.
According to Le Figaro, the request came via email with full instructions for the graduation ceremony.
However, the youngsters were pretty much stunned by the paragraph that sounded like this: “From an aesthetic point of view, it is better for young women to wear a dress or a skirt and a cute little neckline. […] Of course, ladies, this rule is not mandatory.”
Meanwhile… the boys were asked to come in a plain suit
Social media is on fire and students accuse the institution of sexism towards their female community.
The scandal got so much attention that most youngsters were thinking about initiating a protest instead of attending the graduation ceremony.
Witnessing the consequences of the inappropriate email, the dean was forced to apologize.
”The Faculty of Medicine and its dean asks the most sincere apologies […] It is obvious the instructions regarding the clothing for young graduates are both displaced and contrary to values defended daily by ULB and its faculty.”
However, the students are still mad and the screenshot with the email received no less than 30.000 likes and thousands of shares.
Interviewed by RTL Belgium, dean Marco Schetgen, revealed the text was originally written and sent by the secretaries, who are all women.
