Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected in the lead of the AKP Party after three years of absence.
According to Turkish media, Tayyip’s victory was possible after a legislative project proposed during the president’s referendum came into force, suggested an AFP journalist.
‘With 1.414 votes, our state chief was elected as president’, declared Hayati Yazici, the vice-president of AKP in Ankara.
The only candidate, Recep Tayyip Erdogan knew the results long before the news broke.
Tayyip is also the co-founder of the The Justice and Development Party, which he was forced to leave after he was elected as Turkey’s new president in 2014, as the Constitution provides.
In this way, Recep Tayyip Erdogan becomes the first Turkish president who is also running a political party since 1950.
Thousands arrived in the capital of Ankara to attend AKP’s extraordinary congress, organized on Sunday.
‘Starting with the fight against terrorism, economy, expansion of rights and freedom, the era that will come represents the era that will boost Turkey’, declared Recep Tayyip minutes before his victory was announced.
The president will succeed his premier Binali Yildirim, who ruled the controversial party until 2016.
Erdogan obtained on 16th April a major victory during the referendum meant to change the Constitution in order to help the president to dissolve the Parliament.
Obviously, the opposition attacked the results and accused several irregularities.
