The Austrian government announced on Monday that it plans to ban wearing a full Islamic hijab in public places.

This measure is part of the central coalition that currently holds the power. Its target is to relaunch its policy before the rise of the extreme right.

Also, the law is part of a future project preventing terrorist actions.

‘The full veil will be banned in public’, said the Social Democrat Chancellor, Kern Christian.

He presented the law during the conference on the action plan prepared together with his conservative ally.

‘We want to live in an open society and this requires open communication’, stated the Chancellor.

The restriction of wearing a full veil (burqa, niqab) already exists in France, Belgium, Bulgaria and Switzerland.

However, in some regions, the law might be accompanied by a debate on whether people holding a public function will be allowed to wear a hijab or not.

Actually, the Austrian government wants to propose a ‘law of neutrality’.

This law will not have as a specific target the removal of the hijab.

The Austrian government stated they do not desire to give the 600,000 Muslims in Austria the sensation that they are not part of our society.

Under the pressure of numerous inside critics, the coalition between the social democrat and the conservative parties is trying to revive.

Also, numerous observers of this phenomenon are predicting anticipated elections.

In this case, the extreme right party is usually considered the favorite in the voting intentions of the electorate.

The new coalition program places particular emphasis the security and the integration of immigrants.

Furthermore, it provides the opportunity to place under electronic surveillance the jihadists returning from Syria and Iraq.

Also, the refugees and asylum seekers will be required to sign an “integration contract” for a year.
