Fifty years have passed since the terrible disaster occurred at NASA. On January 27 1967 the Apollo 1 spacecraft caught fire.

Three astronauts that were trapped inside, died.

Years later, similar events happened around the same date. On January 28 1986, Challenger exploded and killed seven.

On February 1st 2003, Columbia broke to pieces as it made its return on earth. Seven astronauts passed away in the unfortunate event.

During this time of the year, NASA tries to remember and commemorate the ones that passed away in this tragic events.

This year, at the Kennedy Space Center from Florida, they will reveal a tribute to Apollo 1. People will be able o see the complex and the tribute.

On January 31, NASA will hold the main event to commemorate. Called the “Day of remembrance”, it will feature a ceremony of laying wreaths. This will take place at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Two of the total three that passed away in the Apollo 1 have their graves there. Roger Chaffee and Gus Grissom will be honored during this day.

Although this events were tragic and brought the loss of many, they raised awareness and lead to creating stronger spacecrafts. NASA paid more attention to the safety. Many other astronauts were safe because of that.

With Apollo 1 and with other spacecrafts, NASA prepared for the landing on the moon. Unfortunately, the events turned out for worse.

The astronauts that died in 1967 were great personalities.

Grissom was the second American that flew to space and part of the Mercury team.

Chaffee was about to have his flight in space and was looking forward to it.

Ed White was the first American one to walk in space.
