The Turkish government strongly opposes the referendum for Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence and initiated some massive military drills right near the southern border, warning that a disintegration of the states in the region will most likely generate a global conflict, writes Reuters.

The Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli revealed on Tuesday the referendum on independence, which will take place next week represents a major risk for both countries.

The state leader also added that Turkey will adopt all necessary measures in terms of countering by similar “Kurdish” action in Turkey.

“A change that would mean a violation of Iraq’s territorial integrity poses a great risk to Turkey as well. The disintegration of Syria or Iraq could trigger a global conflict and the end would be hard to foresee”, said Nurettin Canikli.

Leaders of the Kurdish community in Iraq have announced they will organize a referendum on independence on September 25th.

The Kurdish minority from Iraq, made up of millions of citizens, controls three Iraqi provinces that enjoy a high degree of autonomy, having a regional government and their own security services.

The neighboring countries of Turkey and Iran, as well as the United States and the United Nations, have urged for the Kurdish autonomous region of northern Iraq to resolve its disputes with Baghdad through negotiations rather than secession.

Turkey is disputing with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party insurgency for decades now, while a PKK-affiliated Kurdistan Free Movement (PJAK) movement is active in Iran even today.

Both groups are based in Iraq.

The referendum is scheduled for 25th September, when several million Kurds are urged to vote for the independence of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region of Iraq.
