A British who has been sentenced to 10 months in prison can finally go home after he spent no less than 11 years behind bars.

In 2006, James Ward was imprisoned for public protection (IPP) after he willfully tried to destroy a property by torching it.

At that time, The Telegraph wrote that he had received a 10 months sentence.

He was one of the 3.300 convicted under the IPP law, which sparked many controversies in the UK and which was eliminated in 2012.

The law included this clause that after the detainee finishes executing his sentence, he must prove in front of a Commission that he deserves to be released.

Due to this “clause”, most inmates sentenced for IPP, have spent more than 10 months behind bars.

However, James Ward’s case, in particular, drew the international attention due to the fact that he ended up spending more than a decade in prison.

The 32-year-old’s family has initiated several public campaigns in order to obtain his release.

His sister says that even though he is mentally ill, he does not hurt others because he consumes that anger through auto-mutilation and he does not pose a threat to society.

The conditional release commission has now confirmed the release of James Ward, following a hearing on September 4th.

The man now militates in the name of those who were jailed while the IPP law was still active.
