King Salman issued a royal decree, through which he allows women to obtain a driving license without having to obtain permission from her legal guardian.

The Saudi ministers are currently preparing the required reports and in less than 30 days the royal order should be implemented, entering into force by June 2018, writes the Saudi press.

Until two days ago, Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world that banned women from driving without their father or husband in the car or apply for a license without the legal permission of her guardian.

According to Haaretz, there is no law prohibiting women from driving, but there is a law that requires Saudi citizens to use driving licenses issued by the Saudi Arabian authorities while they are in the country.

Such permits are not issued to women, which means it is illegal for them to drive.

According to the decree, the process of imposing this new reform must comply with the standards imposed by Sharia, without giving details.

The measure was hailed by the US Department of State, which dubbed it as “an important step in the right direction” for Saudi Arabia.

The global organizations have constantly criticized the Saudi kingdom’s policy, especially because Saudi women were often arrested and even condemned for not complying with this prohibition.

This decision was adopted due to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is currently attempting a profound transformation of the Saudi economy and society.

Despite this announcement, Saudi women will not be able to drive immediately.
