A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Mexico last night, killing 224 people, including 20 children who died because the ceiling of their school collapsed on them.

Among other damages, the powerful seism caused the devastation of hundreds of buildings, explosions and power surges in the entire area.

While thousands of people are now stranded in the streets because they just witnessed how their own homes were destroyed in a few minutes by the powerful shaking, the most recent reports show that at least 40 people went missing, most of them children.

President Pena Nieto declared a state of national disaster, ordering the authorities and hospitals to assist the victims of the earthquake on the spot, while the government is being urged to access the emergency funds.

Enrique Pena Nieto revealed during a press conference that at least 27 buildings were totally or partially destroyed only in the capital and the governor of Morale Graco Ramirez wrote on his Twitter page that at least 42 died only in his state.

The emergency services intervened in Ciudad de Mexico, where they are struggling to pull as many from the rubbles.

Chief of Civil Protection, Luis Felipe Puente, said no material damage has been reported so far, but thousands of people rushed to evacuate the office buildings on Mexico’s central Reformation Boulevard, shortly after the alarms were activated and the traffic became frozen for several minutes.

According to the US seismological institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and the epicenter was near the Puebla in Raboso, about 123 kilometers southeast from the capital.

The earthquake took place around the day the Mexicans commemorate 32 years since the 1985 earthquake, which was the most devastating in the country’s history.
