The outbreak of a military conflict on the Korean Peninsula would transform into a global war, according to the top analyst on political issues Tina Fordham, writes CNBC.

“A conflict in North Korea will not only be extremely destabilizing in the region, but it could potentially lead to a third world war due to the US security guarantee that could internationalize the conflict overnight” explained the expert from Citi during a “Street Signs” debate held in Singapore at the Milken Institute Asia Summit.

The North Korean crisis is “the biggest geopolitical threat of the moment” and could have a major impact on the financial markets.

“When we look at the political risk, we analyze whether it is likely to provoke a major wave regarding the oil price of or a shocking growth”, the analyst has said.

Tina Fordham also said she does not want to attribute probabilities to future developments in the Korean Peninsula because the variables of the crisis are volatile, highlighting the difficulty of predicting how the tensions between the Pyongyang leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump will evolve.

The Citigroup representative added: “Not only is the North Korean leader in the process of testing his nuclear weapons(Nuclear – No), scoring the sixth this year but also Donald Trump changes the US foreign and security policy in a way I have not seen before.”

South Korea confirmed on Wednesday that traces of radioactive xenon originating from North Korea’s last nuclear test have been detected, but they cannot confirm if the traces originate from the regime’s hydrogen bomb.
