The referendum for the independence of the Kurdish region in Iraq is a “historic mistake”, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag has stated, warning that there will be a price and repercussions if this is going to happen.

Bekir Bozdag also warned that the referendum will also destroy the peace and security into the region.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Kurdish region of Iraq, Massoud Barzani, said the referendum is “a natural right”.

The Government of Baghdad and the states in the region don’t agree with the independence of the Kurds in Iraq, with hundreds of thousands of ethnic Kurds living in Iran, Turkey or Syria, a possible independence of this impressive community will do nothing but encourage other ethnic groups to do the same.

The Baghdad authorities disagree with the political strategy, believing that the referendum could negatively affect the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organization and secession is violating the Constitution.

Turkey is fighting against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party insurgency for decades now, while a PKK-affiliated Kurdistan Free Movement Party (PJAK) is still active in Iran. Both groups are based in Iraq.

The referendum is scheduled for September 25 and millions of Kurds are urged to vote for or against the independence of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region of Iraq.

The Kurdish minority in Iraq controls three Iraqi provinces, which enjoy a high degree of autonomy, having a regional government and their own security institutions.
