Although the Olympic Games will take place only three years from now on, that preparations are already in full swing there.
All the organizational aspects are being discussed, including the manufacturing process of the medals.
Some time ago, the idea of using materials coming from recycled mobile phones seemed pretty crazy.
But, it seems like things are starting to materialize.
The idea first arose in the summer of 2016 as a solution for managing the huge quantity of electronic waste generated by the Japanese, who are big fans of technology.
A gymnast who was also a three times gold medalist at the Olympics, sees the problem in a very interesting way, saying: “Tokyo 2020 medals will be created from the minds and people’s desire to avoid waste. I think it will be an important message for future generations.”
The organizing committee announced the official start of the campaign to encourage people to recycle their smartphones and other gadgets.
These devices contain small amounts of metal, such as gold, silver, nickel and even platinum.
The campaign leaders hope to gather at least 8 tons of precious metals that can be found inside mobile phones.
It will take millions of devices so the necessary material for making 5,000 medals can be gathered.
Although the last competitions of this kind have begun to rely on recycled materials, Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be the first edition where the gold medals will be created entirely from material recovered from wasted devices.
The collection action will be carried out easily, as the organizers have installed more than 2,400 collection points across the country.
