Ankara’s official, Melih Gokcek has launched a virulent attack on Twitter, blaming foreign obscure forces for the earthquakes that struck Canakkale region the last few days.
Gokcek declared that foreign influences are causing the earth movements, accusing a US-based cleric he is trying to sabotage Turkeys economy, using a seismic boat to trigger the earthquakes. The mayor claims he investigated the phenomenon and discovered a foreign vessel doing seismic research and he thinks this could cause artificial earth movements.
The accusations tweeted by Melih Gokcek are not just conspiracy theories, there is also a political touch to the subject and an old vendetta with Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric that supposedly is behind the earthquakes. The mayor claims that Gulenist Terrorist Organisation is planning to attack Turkey using an “earthquake machine” and unseat president Erdogan. Gokcek posted the tweets after two minor earthquakes of 5.3 and 5.4 struck Canakkale province the last two days.
This is not the first time the mayor is blaming the cleric. Last July, during the unsuccessful revolution, when more than 250 people have been killed after military forces used violence in an attempt to get back the power in Turkey, Melih Gokcek accused Fethullah Gulen of being behind the street movements. Gulen denied any implication in that event.
This kind of theories have been entertaining Turkish people and the whole world for years now, the main subjects usually being occult forces, US and Europe being the hidden hand of the Government. Also, Recep Erdogan recently declared that his country’s economic crisis is caused by a deliberate foreign scheme.
