We all know the feeling of despair when we come down under 10% battery on our smartphone. And when we see a public port to charge our phone we feel that we are saved.

The specialists in web security claim that actually we are not saved, we are doomed. Doomed to have all our personal and financial data attacked, just because we used a public charger.

Public ports and outlets are very easy to be hacked claims the manager of a web security firm called Authentic8. Connecting your phone at these unknown locations has a huge risk, he says. And it makes sense. Think about when you are plugging your device to a computer or laptop. That’s how you can access the data on the phone with less protection if any at all. If an outlet is compromised, there is nothing more to be done, as the hacker would have access at all it’s inside your phone.

The term for this cyber-attack is “juice jacking” and it allows the hacker to take any info from your email, photos or contacts. There is also a “video jacking” that means that connecting to a hacked device or port, the attackers can record everything you look at or even type.

Authentic8 even made a research of their own, asking people how often they use public ports. 80% of them said they are frequently using public outlets without any security concern.

The specialists advise us to connect only to safe places and it’s best to have confidence only in our own charger.
