The Russian president signed a law regarding the domestic abuse. According to it, the ones guilty will get more indulgent penalties.
People are not happy about him signing this law. Not only Russians, but the whole world is mad.
This law signals that an abuse is not such a serious crime and people don’t take this too good.
Assault used to be a criminal offence, instead, through this new law, now it is a civilian one.
The law is slightly changed by Putin’s party. Only the ones that caused no serious harm will be involved.
If a man beats his wife, his punish will consist in a $500 fine, community service or in fifteen days of arrest.
If the injuries are more severe, like broken bones, then the charges could be harsher.
The ones that are against this law believe that this will enable parents to punish their children more freely. This will also reduce the state’s power to get involved into people’s private life.
Some have greater fears. This might encourage the abuse. The victims could also feel restricted from denouncing the crime.
The situation regarding the abuses is pretty serious in Russia. About 14,000 women die annually because they are abused by their husbands or family members.
As well, one in three Russian women has injuries provoked by husbands or partners.
The both chambers reviewed the law before Putin signed it. MP Yelena Mizulina is the one that proposed the law.
Many think this is a step back for the country, where measures for helping these people need to be taken and not this kind of law.
