The country has been every excited about the six-hour day experiment. Being paid full time and working only six hours a day? That seems like a dream come true for every employee. But the dream is over, as the analysis took place only for two years.
The experiment was great as far as the people are concerned, but they are dealing with a real struggle: going back to a full 8-hours a day. The majority of the citizens who took part at the test, asked about this aspect, stated that they have less energy now, less time to cook or to spend with their loved ones, so they are having a hard time adjusting to their old working habit.
On the other hand, besides the social aspect, the economics of the trial are very important. The shorter work day brought more hiring in the social care of aging population sector in Sweden, because there was a bigger need for people to cover the rest of the hours, which was a great step in reducing unemployment costs. Also, the researchers were asked to study employees that worked regular day at a similar care home.
The official results of the experiment will be ready next month, but the costs seem to be too high for maintaining a shorter work day for all categories in Sweden and Europe, are starting the contesters of this experiment. But, as they can see the Swedish citizens are happier with an abbreviated work schedule, the authorities asked for more studies about this, to see if there are long-term benefits for the whole society, hoping that this could become the most efficient working program in Europe.
