Angelina Jolie and Netflix partnered for a project that the actress is very passionate about.
The project is called “First they killed my father”. The 41-year-old actress directed the documentary.
On Thursday, the network released a teaser. “Between 1975-1979 Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge killed nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s population” is the sentence the teaser starts with.
The video shows troops marching on a street. The actress is also seen on the set.
The film is the first big one that approaches the war in this way, according to Jolie. The survivors and their children will take part of the movie.
Angelina revealed that there is no one to help these people or tell their story. She wants to do that.
The producer, Rithy Panh, declared: “ Telling a story is also mourning, it’s also moving on.”
The project means a lot for the 41-year-old. She is very close to the country. She visited it numerous times and was involved in projects to help the people.
The movie is inspired by a memoir from 2000: “First they killed my father: A daughter of Cambodia remembers.”
What pushed the actress to work with refugees is her experience in Cambodia. In 2001, she was there to shoot “Lara Craft” and she got to witness the struggles of the country.
Since then, she is constantly involved in such projects. In 2001, she was entitled a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador.
Her first child, Maddox, is a Cambodian. She adopted him in 2002. Her son supported his mother’s decision to do the movie. Maddox also urged her to do it.
The film will premiere on February 18, in Cambodia. Netflix will release it later this year.
