“El Chapo” Guzman, the famous Mexican drug baron, could sue Netflix and Univision for broadcasting a TV series based on his life, stated one of Guzman’s lawyers on Thursday.
The former leader of the Sinaloa, who was imprisoned in the United States after his January extradition, believes he has been “defamed” by the TV series entitled “El Chapo”, in which he is being portrayed as “a heartless killer”, added attorney Jose Refugio Rodriguez.
“The events from the series are not real. This is a serious violation of Mr. Guzman’s presumption of innocence”, said Rodriguez.
This is not the first time when Guzman or one of his lawyers threaten to take legal action against the producers of the controversial TV series, based on the life of the world’s most notorious drug dealer.
Last year, another lawyer threatened to sue the American streaming platform and the Hispanic network for not paying the copyright.
The series, in which the drug baron “El Chapo” is being portrayed by Mexican actor Marco de la O, premiered in April.
“The series has caused him moral prejudice and really affected him, especially in the criminal proceedings ongoing in the United States, and for that reason, we decided to initiate a lawsuit”, said Jose Refugio Rodriguez.
“El Chapo” Guzman, 60, is being defended by two lawyers in the United States because the American justice has refused his Mexican legal team the right to secure his defense in court, fearing in particular that the lives of some witnesses could be put at great risk.
