Spanish judges decided to replace the footballer’s 21-month sentence with a fine after he defrauded the Iberian fiscal authority with 4.1 million euros

A Spanish newspaper wrote the Barcelona star will have to pay a fine of 255.000 euros, while his father will become forced to pay up 180.000 euros.

The fine is actually quite modest, considering the athlete is winning the money in less than three days.

The last hearing of the Supreme Court was held on April 20th, and Wednesday, May 24th, the decision was made public.

Lionel and Jorge Messi have demanded the annulment of the original sentence in July 2016, while the prosecution demanded a 21-month sentence.

In addition, the Supreme Court confirmed the fine of 2.1 million euros that Messi must pay in the following months.

Jorge Messi also reduced his financial sanction from 1.6 million to 1.3 million.

Despite the massive scandal, Messi’s freedom was not jeopardized.

In Spain, less than 24 months’ imprisonment does not involve actual jail time.
