One of the most intricate crime cases from 80’s occurred in France and the victim was 4-year-old Gregory Villemin
After three decades, the French authorities arrested three of the child’s relatives.
The murder of Gregory Villemin remains one of the most controversial and bizarre cases of unresolved crime from the history of France, according to France 24.
In October 1984, the child was found drowned in the cold waters of the Vologne River in eastern France. The toddler’s hands and feet were tied.
The case of Gregory triggered a genuine saga that has been grinding for years the French public opinion.
Wednesday morning, 33 years after the tragic appearance on the Vologne River, the prosecutors required the arrest of Marcel Jacob, one of Gregory’s uncles, and his wife, in the Vosges.
Ginette Villemin, the boy’s aunt, was also detained the same day, AFP reports.
Also, Gregory’s grandparents were called to interrogation, being released a few hours later.
Arrests “target people very close to the core of this case and seek to clarify certain issues and provide answers to certain questions,” said French prosecutor Jacques Bosc.
“It is a huge step on the path that leads us towards the truth,” said Thierry Moser, the attorney of Gregory Villemin’s parents.
The case, caught in a genuine “spider web” of family relationships, was reopened in 2010 in the context of new DNA research techniques.
The next day, after Gregory’s body was found drowned, the boy’s parents received an anonymous letter saying that their son had been killed as a “revenge.”
Graphologists studied the handwriting and identified Marcel Jacob, as the possible author of the murder.
Wednesday’s arrests are based on accusations of criminality, according to a local newspaper, which brought the case back to light.
So far, about 100 witnesses have been interrogated, some for the first time.
Also, over 2,000 anonymous letters received by those involved in this complicated story have been analyzed.
