Australia suspends the operations against ISIS in Syria after Russia warned the Australian army they are planning to treat any aircraft from the US-led coalition as potential targets
The Australian government said the break was labeled as a “precautionary measure” without offering further details.
Moscow’s warning came after the US took down a Syrian military plane.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense also talked about its plans of stopping any communication with the US in order to prevent such incidents.
Australia has about 780 soldiers in Syria and Iraq as part of a US-led coalition designated to eliminate every single trace of the terrorist organization.
The measure of stopping the air operations follows the coalition’s decision of removing the jihadi militants from Rakka, the de facto capital of the Caliphate.
A Syrian fighter plane was taken down by an American aircraft near the Rakka Province, confirmed the US Army.
The SU-22 bomber belonging to the Syrian military forces was taken down during an air raid conducted in the areas where the United States-Syrian Democratic Forces established its headquarters, the Pentagon has said.
Syria condemned the act, labeling it as a “flagrant attack” that would have “dangerous repercussions”.
The Syrian army said its warplane was on a mission against ISIS when its fire opened, broadcasting state-run television.
An army statement said the airplane pilot was missing.
In the press statement, Russian Foreign Minister Serghei Lavrov, whose government supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said “all countries must fully respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
