Serbia’s president designated Ana Brnabic as prime minister

Branbic becoming the first woman and the first homosexual politician to occupy an important position in the government of the very conservative Balkan country writes the Independent.

Brnabic, who is not a member of any political party, has become Serbia’s first homosexual MP last year.

Her appointment was a real shock in a country that has made very little progress when it comes to the LGBT community.

President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Thursday that Ana Brnabic is his official nomination for the position of prime minister.

The next step for Ana is now to form a new government to be voted by the parliament next week.

Vucic called her appointment as Prime Minister as “a difficult decision for Serbia’s interest and its citizens”.

Brnabic is currently Minister of Public Administration

The new 41-year-old prime minister was named ‘the businesswoman of the year’ in Serbia.

The politician studied in the UK and United States and she is fluent in English and Russian.

President Aleksandar Vucic promised to improve gay rights as part of the country’s efforts to join the European Union.

Brnabic’s appointment comes just one day after Ireland became the first Catholic country with a gay prime minister.

Ana Brnabic will be the second lesbian European prime minister after Iceland’s Prime Minister Johanna Siguroardottir became the world’s first leader married with a same-sex partner.
