On 20th anniversary, man donates kidney to wife

A couple from Virginia celebrated their 20^th wedding anniversary in a rather unique way. The man donated a kidney to his longtime wife.

Scott and Cindy Chafian are their names. Cindy suffered from a disorder that affected her kidneys. Her kidneys were larger than they needed to be because of some cysts that developed. The 45-year-old woman was diagnosed when she was only 22.

Members of the family also had such complications, but went through successful transplants.

Cindy began to be even more affected as she reached her forties. Then, she had to be put on the waiting list for a donor.

Since her condition was getting worse, her husband discussed the possibility of him being the donor. A few years ago they did the necessary tests, but Cindy wasn’t ready for it.

The reason why she declined then was because she was concerned about a possible complication. She didn’t want something bad to happen to her husband.

Three years ago, Scott insisted she undertakes the surgery. He didn’t stand seeing her struggle, going through dialysis. The illness affected her life, she couldn’t enjoy the time spend with her family, with the children.

In September, her state was pretty worse. Scott decided he had enough. She pushed harder for her to take the surgery. She, eventually, accepted. The 47-year-old didn’t stay much and just went with it.

They made an appointment and last week, Cindy and Scott went to the transplant surgery.

On January 25, they celebrated the 20^th anniversary. One day before, they went through surgery. The surgery was successful and they are both recovering well.

She couldn’t imagine a better and more special gift.
