Ken Clarke delivers anti-Brexit speech

On Tuesday, conservative Ken Clarke delivered a speech at the House of Commons. He expressed his attitude towards Brexit, which he is totally against of.

His speech was full of passion. He stands for his views regarding the European Union and why the Brexit bill should not be voted.

Ken Clarke was part of the government during Margaret Thatcher’s time. Thatcher introduced the Great Britain to the European Single Market and her policy has been able to stick for a very long time. What Brexit will first mark is the departure from this market.

He accuses the present party of having “anti-immigrant” beliefs.

 He brings a former MP into discussion, Enoch Powell. He once delivered a speech that contained such anti-immigrant views. His party now shares the same thoughts, but much later.

Clarke goes further and adds that former prime minister David Cameron shouldn’t have let such an important decision be decided by a referendum.

He adds that he doesn’t see the country as having a success by itself. What Brexit wants to ensure is that Britain becomes independent and therefore, prone to a better economic situation, but Clarke can’t picture it.

He points to May’s visits to Turkey and US. The Conservative thinks that Britain can’t close trade deals with such countries, given the situation they are in now.

Others will hold speeches in the course of today, as the House of Commons debates on leaving the European Union or not.

If they reach a consensus, the Prime Minister Theresa May will be initiating the departure formalities.

On Wednesday weekend, the debates will end.
