Pope Francis supports native people’s rights over their own lands

On Wednesday, Pope Francis weighed in over the rights ancestral people have over their lands.

He interfered after US president, Donald Trump, revealed he will continue to build a pipeline even if he doesn’t have the Indian’s consent. This project is estimated at 3.8 million dollars.

The Pope attended a meeting from UN where indigenous people were represented. Right now, the biggest issue these people have is getting rights over their own land and cultures. They want to be able to develop in the economic field, but without affecting their cultures.

Pope Francis declared that consent should always be asked before. If the authorities want to establish peaceful connections, then they need to cooperate. If the Government respects their decisions, then it means they show respect and appreciation to these communities.

A couple of tribes from Dakota have sued against the pipeline that is going to be build. The oil that is going to be brought will affect their fields and water. This will also be an impediment for practicing their rituals. They need only pure water.

The pipeline will be placed near their border and will definitely affect. Even if their consent wasn’t given, the company insists that the water will not be affected.

The Pope did not refer exactly to the groups from Dakota, but was addressing a general issue. This is not the first time he opens up about this subject. He has been a constant supporter of the rights of these people.

Pope Francis has always shown support for a number of causes. He fights against climate change and raised awareness.

It is a great possibility the Pope will meet Trump in May, but nothing concrete has been established.
