Russia & the cruel reality of domestic violence

Russia: Vladimir Putin issued the controversial law meant to reduce the punishments for domestic violence.

Adopted at the end of January by most MP’s and voted in February by senators, this new law diminishes the punishments for batteries committed in the family.

According to the new law, the two-years-punishment turned into a simple advisory, except the cases of severe aggression.

The conservative deputies who initiated this procedure, presented the new law as a method to correct ‘an anomaly’ present in the Russian legislation.

The ‘anomaly’ says that authors of domestic violence are prosecuted, while the batteries committed outside the familial circle are sanctioned according to the civil rights.

However, the change generated massive protests from Russian activists and several humanitarian organizations.

The Russian people believes this new law disrupts the fight against domestic violence and caused a national debate.

According to a Russian agency of statistics, 49.579 cases of domestic violence were reported only in 2015.

35.899 also involved aggression committed on women.
