France: Louvre attacker refuses to answer investigators’ questions

The author of the machete attack that happened on Friday on some troops who provided the security in front of Louvre Museum in Paris, is supposed to be an Egyptian, aged 29 years.

Apparently, he refuses to answer the questions coming from the investigators. They are trying to formally establish his identity, as reported AFP on Monday.

After the first hearing on Sunday morning, the investigators have tried again to interrogate the suspect in the hospital where he was brought suffering from serious injuries following the attack. But, he “still refuses to speak”, said the judicial source on Sunday night.

The French authorities have tried to establish the identity of the attacker, who could be Abdallah El-Hamahmy, a 29-year-old Egyptian, who arrived a week ago in France with a tourist visa.

He was hospitalized with serious injuries in the abdomen after the attacked military retaliated with a firearm.

His condition had improved significantly on Saturday. He is placed in custody in the hospital and the medical staff considered that the hearings are now possible.

On Friday morning, the attacker, armed with two 40cm machetes, attacked a patrol of four soldiers, shouting “Allah Akbar”.

One of the soldiers was slightly injured in the head, while the second tried to stop the aggressor without a weapon at first, but later, he found it necessary to fire four shots, causing him serious injuries.

The Louvre, one of the world’s busiest museums, was closed after the attack, but reopened its doors Saturday.

This attack has revived the painful memories of France, where a number of jihadist attacks have left behind about 238 deaths in 2015 and 2016, after which the French authorities have established a curfew.
