A zoo from Netherlands found an original method to raise the chances of controlled breeding for the orangutans: online dating.

A female ape could choose her male by pressing a touchscreen, before the actual meeting between the two of them.

The park will initiate an experiment that will take about four years, called “Auction for orangutans”.

During the research, Samboja, the 11 years old female, will view the photos of her possible partners during an international reproduction program for the big primates.

The study is developed in order to understand the way the female choose their partner and what are the main principles.

The Zoo management is ready to make any sacrifices for the breeding to take place as they wish, so they announced that some males could come from very long distance, like Singapore, if the females prefer them.

The experiment is part of a bigger project, studying the role of emotions in the animal world, stated Thomas Bionda, the biologist in charge, for NOS TV channel.

The only problem they had was creating a touchscreen resistant enough for Samboja, whose mother, Sandy is called “The Destruction Woman”.

When the researchers will have a stronger touchscreen, they will be able to analyze if the looks are enough to create a powerful bond between two apes or there is something more that that is their selection process for breeding.

“The process is completely digital. Usually, the smell plays and important role, but for the orangutans we will apply the principle what you see is what you get”, said Bionda.
