Venezuela’s parliament, dominated by the opposition, accused President Nicolas Maduro power on Sunday on having committed a ‘coup’ by suspending the presidential revocation referendum.

During a stormy four-hour meeting was suspended for 45 minutes following the invasion of his supporters in the Maduro courtroom, the Parliament invited the Venezuelan people and the international community to defend democracy.

In a resolution, the National Assembly decided to declare ‘the interruption of constitutional order and the existence of a coup perpetrated by the regime of Nicolas Maduro.’

Consequently, it invites ‘the people of Venezuela in active defense of the Constitution until the restoration of constitutional order’ and ‘urges the international community to activate mechanisms’ that is likely to bring ‘democracy’ in the country.

The armed forces are also asked ‘not to listen or to execute something that would be contrary to the Constitution.’

The extraordinary meeting was disrupted by the entry into force of the chaviste groups (named after the late President Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s predecessor and mentor). There were stampedes, kicks and insults and a few people were slightly injured.

The MEPs called on Tuesday a meeting to ‘determine the constitutional position of the President’, which they accuse of Venezuelan and Colombian nationality double take, which would not allow them to perform their duties.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) announced late Thursday that it would postpone “the process of collecting signatures provided next week’ indefinitely, to convening a referendum to revoke President Maduro’s requested on several months of opposition.

This would be the last step for the opposition center-right rallies Platform for Democratic Unity (MUD) and the majority in Parliament before they can organize such a referendum against the Socialist president. The opposition vehemently protested against the decision of the CNE.

The National Assembly decided on Sunday ‘to use immediately’ to replace CNE officers and the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), two institutions that they consider allied opposition of the executive.

MUD accuses Maduro of being responsible for the economic collapse of the country’s oil asphyxiated by lowering the price of crude oil, its main source of income.
