The latest relocation by Russia of Iskander missiles mobile systems in the Kaliningrad region is not a threat to the European Union but is a warning to NATO, said Thursday in an interview for Euronews the Russian Ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, according to the publication in the Russian Vzgliad.
‘In fact, Russia warns NATO this way. I do not think it has to do with the EU,’ the Russian diplomat said, asked if the Iskander systems in Kaliningrad transfer represent a direct military threat to the EU. If anything threatens the EU, it comes primarily from itself, said Chizhov.
Moscow, according to him, warned NATO earlier that when installing the Alliance in neighboring Russia of systems able to shoot down ballistic missiles, Russia will take as a measure of retaliation deployment of short-range missiles action in Kaliningrad Russian territory situated between Lithuania and Poland.
President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite, had described on Tuesday the transfer of Russian missile “Iskander-M” systems in the Kaliningrad region as ‘an aggressive demonstration of force’ in the face of Europe.
On 14 October, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Alliance is deeply concerned by the placement of the Soviet missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads near the borders of NATO and that it will continue its policy of strengthening the defense, along with political dialogue.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on October 8 at press information on the transfer of mobile systems Iskander-M missiles in Kaliningrad. The ministry spokesman, Colonel-General Igor Konaşenkov, said that ‘nobody has done a secret of Iskander systems in Kaliningrad transport’ for the purposes of routine exercises, as in other occasions in the past.
Installing Iskander-M missiles in the Kaliningrad region significantly change the military-political situation in the region, given that it creates tactical superiority of the Russian armed forces, writes the newspaper cited in its electronic page.
The subject is expected to be discussed on 26-27 October in Brussels at a meeting of defense ministers of the 28 NATO member countries.
