After months of speculation, carmaker Nissan confirmed on Thursday that it will produce the new model Qashqai and the X-Trail SUV at the factory from Sunderland, UK.
The decision will provide 7,000 jobs. The possibility to create new jobs offers represent a side effect of the ‘support and the assurances provided by the British Government’, stated the Japanese manufacturer.
The Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced last month that the alliance will stop investing in the UK unless he will receive a warranty that Renault-Nissan will receive compensations after the UK imposed the taxes for vehicles manufactured in the kingdom.
The production for the next generation of Qashqai will start in 2018 or 2019 and the decision to manufacture the new X-Trail in the UK is extremely unexpected.
The Nissan factory is the largest in the UK produces 475,000 vehicles per year. 80% of these vehicles are exported to 130 markets around the world.
In the factory based in Sunderland, 24,000 employees are producing only the Qashqai, Note, Juke, and Leaf.
‘I am pleased to announce that Nissan continues to invest in Sunderland. The support and assurances received from the British Government persuaded us to produce the new model in Sunderland’, stated Carlos Ghosn said on Thursday.
Nissan’s decision is a vote of confidence which proves that the UK is open for business.
The UK remains the second largest car market in the EU, after Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
