Microsoft’s former CEO Steve Ballmer claims the software giant tried at one point to purchase Facebook for $24 billion.
Ballmer left Microsoft in 2014 and he currently owns the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team. The American entrepreneur is also a major investor in Twitter.
Ever since its launching, the social network received numerous buying offers and Microsoft presented theirs when the social network was not that popular.
According to Ballmer, Mark Zuckerberg denied the offer and it turned out that he made the right choice.
‘I think $24 billion when the company was itsy-bitsy and [Zuckerberg] said no’ Ballmer said. ‘And I respect that.’
The current market value of Facebook is $375 billion dollars and Zuckerberg’s net worth is $57 dollars.
The former CEO revealed that he never showed any signs of interest regarding Twitter, a social platform that one time posed a serious threat in front of Facebook.
As a sign of respect towards current Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Ballmer said that he did a good job by focusing on the cloud services, that had a positive impact on the company.
Ballmer led the company between 2000 and 2014 and said that his biggest mistake was the acquisition of advertising company aQuantive. The purchase cost Microsoft around $6,2 billion. Another mistake, according to him was the acquisition of the Nokia division for $7,2 billion.
Ballmer made the revelations during a CNBC show. The entire interview can be watched online.
