Indian authorities said on Tuesday morning that 19 people lost their lives in a violent fire that destroyed a private hospital in the eastern province of Odisha. The fire started in the dialysis ward of the SUM medical center in the provincial capital Bhubaneswar, wrote Reuters.
The local media said there could be at least 23 dead people in the fire and more than 100 people severely injured.
The first information shows that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.
Also, most of the victims were elders who died asphyxiated by the toxic gas fire products.
Ambulances have transported more than 120 patients to other hospitals, while firefighters battled all night to control the flames.
Some patients injured in the fire are hospitalized in critical condition and treated for burns.
‘We are trying our best to save their lives,’ said in a statement the Department of Health in the province of Odisha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that the tragedy is a creepy one spent in hospital and urged health authorities to speed up transportation of injured patients to government hospitals nearby.
It took the firefighters several hours to extinguish the fire, whose causes are yet unclear. According to AFP, the cause could have been triggered by a short circuit.
Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister said on Twitter that she was ‘deeply affected by the loss of so many lives’ and described the event as a ‘frightening’ tragedy.
This kind of incident is a great tragedy that could be avoided if the equipment is better checked.
